Start Your Week Right: With My Morning Jacket - Into the Woods

Tell me: was your weekend kick-ass? Was it because you kicked it off with a little My Morning Jacket and Wordless Chorus? I think you know what the answer is. Spring is nearly upon us, and I guarantee that this week is going to be awesome, no matter where you are.

At The Countdown, we are still in the early stages of “The Z Segment,” with today being “It Beats 4 U Day,” the second track off the 2005 album. This week, we’ll be covering the first half of the album, all the way to “Into the Woods,” track number 6.

Let’s delve deeper into “Into the Woods” today (notice how I totally could’ve made a pun there, but decided against it). In my personal opinion, this track is definitely Z’s, if not My Morning Jacket’s, most underrated tune. Most people can’t seem to get past the song’s off-putting first few lines:

A kitten on fire, a baby in a blender:

Both sound as sweet as a night of surrender.

However, this song carries a lot of lyrical meaning, particularly to those of us who are leading a “single life.” Exploring ideas of identity and relationships, “Into the Woods” seems to cajole us to go and “find ourselves” prior to getting into a serious relationship.

A good showerhead and my right hand:

The two best lovers that I ever had.

Now if you find you agree with what I just said:

You better find a new love and let ‘em into your head.

With almost humorous lines like that, who can’t identify? We’ve all been there, alone, without a significant other, so we know exactly what he’s talking about. However, “Into the Woods” warns us against getting intimate with someone who is feeding us bullshit about who they really are:

Now open your mouth, here comes the spoon:

You’re eat what I give you, you’re gonna like it real good.

Basically, don’t settle! A true lover is someone who is honest about who they are and can accept you for just that.

(Just something awesome that I didn't share last week)

So have a good week, everyone, and to all you single people out there: don’t ever give up! And good luck. J

Also, don’t forget to start your week with a new download from MMJ. Get yours today!

i couldn't agree more . . .into the woods is soooo vastly underrated. i'm not sure if that's a testament to the brilliance of the rest of the songs or just sheer ignorance on the part of so many. i love the song. it's playful and fun, like some odd trip to oz on lsd. it's great.
