Possible Ryan Adams?!?!?!

Thanks Chris!

From RawkBbog.com:

Ryan Adams super-fans have been following him on his Internet adventures for quite some time now, so it’s been interesting to see him jump to Facebook over the last few months as his main source of communication. Ol’ DRA has been dropping some serious hints on his official page lately — about a new album, an old album and even a possible tour as he gets his bearings back after taking time off due to tinnitus and Ménière’s disease. (And marriage. And book-writing. And art shows.)
"New songs in the morning at one studio and Finishing old tunes in another in the evening! Trying to get it all together. Fingers crossed. Who Knows, Maybe I’ll even have to dust off the bat signal this fall…"
Given that Ryan has (finally!) been releasing new material lately, including the upcoming “metal” album, Orion, through his own Pax-Am label and seems to be done with Lost Highway and the major label system, one can only hope this means our hero might actually, honestly, be working on the mythical box set we’ve been waiting for since 2004 or so. Not that I’d mind new jams, either! Speaking of which: here’s “Electrosnake,” the first single from Orion.

My Morning Jacket Columbus, OH Ticket Giveaway!

Alright everyone, I know it is short notice but I've got one ticket for My Morning Jacket at the Lifestyle Community Pavillion in Columbus, OH for this Sunday, May 1st. After getting some very crude suggestions as to how I should decide who the ticket goes to, I've decided to make it very simple: tell me why you deserve it!

Leave a comment, shoot me an email, or Tweet me and tell me why I should give you the ticket to you. Come show time I can do one of two things: 1) leave the ticket at will call or 2) we can meet and I can give it to you. That will be your call though.

The last submission I will accept is at 5pm Central Time on Friday, April 30th and I'll be making my decision shortly after that.

Hope to get some good responses!

My Morning Jacket - New Orleans Jazz Festival Review

Thank you Joseph S. for this review from the New Orleans Jazz Festival!

After waiting over a year and a half it was great to see the boys come out and jam the Jazz Fest.

Luckily after the rain on Friday the weather was about perfect for the MMJ show. They came on shortly after five thirty and the first thing I  noticed even before the music is that Yim Yames was wearing holsters with two fake guns in them. Kind of a western cowboy look. I was not close enough to verify but speculate they were duck hunt guns (EDIT - this is accurate). Periodically he would point the at the crowd. Pretty Funny.

They started with a very brief musical interlude, that really never had a  groove, but was just a warm, then the opener "One Big Holiday" and we were off and running. The sound was good and the boys were tight.

Set list remained a pretty standard show with the boys playing tight and well and the crowd was pretty into it.  "Thank You Too" seemed a bit slow for fitting with the rest of the show, but still a solid version if you are
a fan of the song.

The setlist from the forum, see below indicated that "Evil Urges" was played before "Highly Suspicious" and with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. I did not write anything down, but was fairly certain that the first song with the PHB was "Highly Suspicious," which was funky. This represented my favorite run of songs, it was different, awesome, and very New Orleans with "Mother in Law," "Carnival Time," and "Move On Up." There was a group of locals that pretty well just stood and enjoyed the show the whole time, but when they played "Mother In Law" the locals went nuts.

After "Move On Up" I really wanted one more MMJ song, but I think they used up all their time. I saw several bands during the fest and the only one I saw do an encore was the Allman Brothers. The crowd stuck around for a good long time trying to get them back on, but it did not happen.

There was a good crowd for Jacket, but nice and spaced out with most people heading to Simon & Garfunkle. Good for the Jacket fans.

Another thing that was different for me was to see them with the big projection screens. I have seen six shows, including two at Bonnaroo, but never were at the main stage or with projections screens.   Caught myself watching them a bunch.

Well another good show. Not the best I have seen, but solid for the time they were allowed. With the short format it was tough not seeing the long jams I love like "Dondante," "Run Thru," "Steam Engine,"  "Phone Went West", etc.

Looking forward to Columbus

My Morning Jacket - The Chastain Park Amphitheatre - Atlanta, GA - 2010-04

So I'm not sure if Taylor Caine, taper extraordinaire, is even a human being. It tapes shows and has them up on The Archive early the next morning. Here is last nights show in Atlanta, GA. I've added a counter to the Columbus show (the only show I can get to this time around) in the top right, it can't come soon enough. But I'll say it again, Taylor, I'll buy you a beer or a can or motor oil (or whatever robots consume) if you're going to be there.

Thanks Taylor.

Really loving the new solo in "I'm Amazed."

Model Stranger - Dreams & Bones Album Review

Chicago natives Model Stranger are playing the Cubby Bear in Wrigleyville Saturday evening for a CD release show. Their latest effort Dreams & Bones is their best work to date. I attended the listening party a few weeks back and enjoyed the hell out of the record in a loud, crowded room. I've since gotten my hands on a copy of the record and the personal time I've spent with it has only solidified my first impression: these boys have a possibly career changing record on their hands. The 9 track LP doesn't really begin, it just starts. Does that make sense? Think of Neil Young's "Like a Hurricane" (not comparing songs, just the way it's rockin' right off the bat). "She Don't" sets a nice tone for the rest of the record with it's huge vocals and soaring guitar solo's. "Turn of the Century" is a song that appeared on their EP, A Boy and His Crown, but it has been re-recorded (analog baby! these guys don't mess around) in superior form. While this record feels nothing like the EP, listening to the song amongst this batch of tunes makes me wonder how it ever fit anywhere else (pay attention to the keyboard, it's as if it's floating along with the rest of the music, a really nice touch). "Eyes Half Open" is a monster of a song.  From the filthy guitar riff to the hazy lyrics, this track just f*cking rocks. The almost cult like title track closes the album on a very memorable note with a searing riff and beat to match. Front man Stephen Francis eerily sings "We are made, we are made, we are composed of dreams and bones"  If lemmings listened to music, the song "Dreams & Bones" is what they'd listen to while walking over the edge. Chilling stuff.

What it comes down to for me is that Model Stranger writes great rock and roll. They're capable of writing songs you want to sing along with at the top of your lungs and they're also capable of writing the softer ballad that quiets the room. It's near impossible to not draw comparisons to many great classic rock bands; from their sound, to their recording methods (again, all analog!) to the way they look, these dudes might own a DeLorean.

If you haven't already checked these guys out clear your schedule for Saturday night (4/24) and come out to the Cubby Bear in Wrigleyville. They're always playing in the Chicago area and I assure you, they are a real treat live. On top of their great original tunes they always throw in some excellent covers and it's not uncommon for their sets to go for three plus hours. Model Stranger will take the stage at 11:00 pm on April 24th. Chicago native acts Verona Red, 20 Mark Helga, The Flavor Savers and Cavalry will also be on the bill. Tickets for the show are available for $8 presale and $10 the day of show on Ticketmaster.

My Morning Jacket - The Municipal Auditorium - Nashville, TN - 2010-4-21

Taylor Caine, I want to kiss you on the mouth. Another insane turn around. For those of you that don't know, Taylor Caine attended, taped and uploaded the tour opener in the blink of an eye (seriously record timing I think, it can be found here). And now, the same was just done for the second show of the tour in Nashville.

Taylor, if you're going to be in Columbus, I'd love to buy you a beer.

THANK YOU TAYLOR.

My Morning Jacket - The Alabama Theatre - 2010-04-20

**This recording is really great, thanks again Taylor.**

Taylor Caine, you are an amazing man or woman. Last nights show already up on the Archive. This has to be some sort of record, good work my friend.
The "One Big Holiday" intro is f*cking amazing. Pardon the brutalness, it's really the only way to describe it.

I don't have access to Photoshop right now, I'll get some legit cover work soon. This is sort of a mobile post.

I know what I'm doing tonight! The entire show is streaming below and the download link is after the set list..

Neil Young & Crazy Horse - The Complex Sessions

Have a great weekend everyone, The Steam Engine will be at Atoms for Peace first Chicago show on Saturday at the Aragon this weekend, cannot wait!

Not my words-

On October 3rd & 4th, 1994, Neil Young & Crazy Horse and director Jonathan Demme convened in Complex Studios in L.A. to make a film. The Complex Sessions captured Neil and the band just after the Sleeps With Angels recording sessions, as Young was still obsessing over the death of Nirvana's Kurt Cobain. Although the two never met, you might remember their chilling connection... Cobain quoted Young's lyric, "it's better to burn out than to fade away," in his suicide note.

What you have here is the audio version of those filmed sessions. Four songs, clocking in at over 25 minutes. No audience, no clutter, no bullshit. Whether Young specifically sang any of these songs with Cobain in mind is hard to say. In fact, he had performed some of them in concert well before this recording date. But, it doesn't take a lot to read Young's empathy into a lyric like "...when life is hanging in the breeze."

The Raconteurs - The Henry Fonda Theater - 2008-5-18

**LINK UPDATED 2010-11-29**

This Jack White spell I've had of late shows no signs of slowing. The more I listen, read about, discuss, whatever, about him and his projects the more I understand how special the dude actually is. Since 1999 he's played in 3 large to semi large acts (in our music world, not U2's) (The White Stripes, The Raconteurs, The Dead Weather, solo album soon?) he's made 10 records (including The Dead Weathers next record, Sea of Cowards), produced 28 (albums/singles), has won 5.5 Grammys, done quite a bit of movie work, has started Third Man Records, and the list goes on. He's one of the busiest men in music. BUT I'm not saying "he has these accomplishments, that makes him good" im saying he's accomplished that much and it has been good, he's consistently put out interesting, quality work.

Anyways, Jack White fans, grab this one. His guitar work is stellar throughout but their are moments on this recording that will blow your mind. This is the best "Blue Veins" jam I've heard to date.
