Jeff Luke Photography - Great Lake Swimmers - Minneapolis, MN - 7th Street - 4-22-09 Photos

The Steam Engines friend Jeff Luke was at GLS the night after I was and he took some amazing photos. Jeff told me the lighting was poor but, somehow, he still managed to take some great shots. After you check out the GLS shots make sure to look at his My Morning Jacket photos (he is as good at photography as Mike Tyson is at being a low life, REALLY GOOD).

M. Ward - 2008-4-27 - The Vic - Chicago, IL

M. Ward was great last night. We were at some open face bar kiddy corner from the venue having a really great time enjoying the hell out of the weather before the show and since we were having such a great time we skipped the opener but got there with plenty of time to see M. Wards set. I was really not too sure what to expect from M., I only know less than half his catalog and I literally know nothing about him. I don't have a set list or much detail but I was really blown away by his performance and his voice is fantastic; I've always loved it but seeing it like that really made me appreciate it. The Happy Genius Heroes guys were there too but our reviews are pretty similiar. If you have the chance to see this guy you really should, he is a fantastic songwriter.

Great Lake Swimmers - Schuba's in Chicago - 2009-4-21

Absolutely great set from the GLS last night. The axle on their trailer broke in Indianapolis and they did not get on until 11:15pm but the whole band worked quite diligently to get things moving and once they were on they were fantastic. We were seated on the head honcho's (Tony Dekker) left side right by the multi-instrumentalist of the band, Erik Arneson, I had an opportunity to speak with him and get his autograph on one of the tour posters. He actually remembered me from the last time they played there and I got an autograph on the tour poster, kind of cool. Anyways, if you guys have the chance, go see Great Lake Swimmers, A+ band.

I will have more pictures and a video of "Your Rocky Spine" later today or tomorrow, I hope the audio doesn't sound too poor.

Also, my buddy has a photo pass for tonight's show in Minneapolis so look forward to those pictures too!

Rock Stars and Us

Good morning everyone. I was just talking with my buddy Chris, he had an excellent night at Wilco in Tennessee the other night, and was able to get a couple of pictures with Jeff Tweedy. It got me thinking that I would LOVE to see the pictures all of you guys have with members of bands. Email them to thesteamengine23@gmail.com and after a couple of weeks I am going to post all of them. Thanks guys!

Record Store Day Score

I was at Kiss The Sky in Geneva, IL promptly at 9:30AM (they open at 10) and while I already had the MMJ EP and the Wilco DVD put aside for me I still wanted to grab a couple other choice items.

From the 9 o'clock position:

Kings Of Leon - (A) Use Somebody (B) Knocked Up (Lykke LI vs. Rodeo Remix)

Wilco - Ashes of American Flags DVD - watched it once, its great EXCEPT for the fact that the extras and the actual film are not combined, instead of one long set you get 2 shorter sets.

Whiskeytown - (A) San Antone (B) The Great Divide

My Morning Jacket - Celebracion De La Ciudad Natal - Excellent.

Venue Information!

Alpine Valley - East Troy, WI

One of my favorite outdoor venues even though I've never been here for a concert of any substance. I've mostly seen Dave Matthews Band concerts here in my high school days. The "parking lot" is a big huge party (before every show I've been to at least) and is ultra fun if you are in the mood to be an idiot and party. They have some big acts rolling through this Summer, most notably Dave, Phish and Coldplay.

Pacific Amphitheater - Costa Mesa, Orange County, CA

Never actually been here. The place was shut down for a while but was reopened sans lawn area turning from an 18k person venue to a 8.5k venue. It's kind of cool they didn't act like "the man" and try to cram a bunch of people in there like some kind of van. Watch for The Moody Blues cruisin' through this Summer on July 9th.

Bank of America Pavillion - Boston, MA

I am a virgin to this place as well. BUT I have posted a kick ass show from Ryan Adams & The Cards' here. They just put $40 millyone in this place in an attempt to make it nice. Anyone ever go to a show here? Boston is a future travel destination for the J-Dog and maybe I'll plan that trip around a show at this place. I mean, f*&$, it's gotta be nice with a $40 mill facelift.

Catch CSN on June 14th.

Great Lake Swimmers - The Mill - Iowa City - 2006-04-18

I really enjoy these guys. Tony Dekker has proven himself to be quite the songwriter. He writes beautiful music and his lyrics burn such a vivid image in your head, not much to dislike. Anyone catching these guys this tour? I'll be at Schuba's in Chicago (2nd time seeing them there, last time was simply amazing), anyone going?

Their new album Lost Channels is really spectacular.

Enjoy!
