Happy holidays guys, I've been enjoying a break from everything. It's been great. I hope a wonderful new year to everyone. Thanks for the continued support, every message, comment and email I receive brings me pure happiness and I thank you.
Now enjoy this soundboard Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks show. I feel like I don't see many live Malkmus shows out there, I know people over at the forum have some but I can't recall ever downloading one (other than the one other I have posted). BUT, if you guys have 'em, send 'em on down! I'd appreciate it. Been listening to lots of his solo stuff, particularly Face the Truth.
Once again HAPPY NEW YEAR!
PS - Anyone going to The Black Keys in Chicago on the 1st of the year? The camera on my phone is busted and would love to know if someone is taking some. THANKS!!!!

Cardinals bassist Chris Feinstein has passed away at his Manhattan home. He was 42.
Feinstein, endearingly known by the awesome nickname of Spacewolf by bandmates and fans alike, recorded and toured as a member of Ryan Adams & the Cardinals for their last two full-length albums, Easy Tiger and Cardinology. His discography also includes numerous songwriting credits for Santigold’s then-eponymous album Santogold, and bass performance on Albert Hammond, Jr.’s song “Scared” from his solo album, Yours to Keep.
Most recently, Feinstein and fellow Cardinals Jon Graboff, Brad Pemberton, and Neal Casal recorded and performed with New Zealand-born singer/songwriter Gin Wigmore.
All three surviving Cardinals members have posted reactions to this sad news online, including a series of photographs on guitarist Neal Casal’s blog and drummer Brad Pemberton’s Facebook message: “This is the saddest day of my life. I lost my best friend today…things will never be quite the same.” Matthew Ryan a friend and former collaborator with Feinstein also posted a tribute on YouTube earlier today.
Though Feinstein’s family recently confirmed the story, as well, there are few details about his untimely death available at the moment. If/when important info comes to light, we will update this post accordingly.
The Pacific Northwest indie label Kill Rock Stars and the tragic, beloved singer-songwriter Elliott Smith have a long history together. Before he decamped for DreamWorks and hit the mainstream via Good Will Hunting, Smith released two intimate, absolutely stone-classic records on KRS: 1995's self-titled album and 1997's Either/Or.
In 2007, four years after Smith's death, KRS released the posthumous double-CD rarities collection New Moon. And next year, the label will reissue two more Smith albums: his 1994 solo debut Roman Candle (originally released on Cavity Search) and the 2004 posthumous full-length From a Basement on the Hill (originally released on Anti-).
Both reissues are due April 6. Tape Op Magazine editor and Smith archivist Larry Crane has remastered Roman Candle, and this reissue marks the first time it'll be available on vinyl in the U.S. When the reissues drop, every Smith album other than his two major label albums (1998's XO and 2000's Figure 8) will be available via KRS.
In honor of the reissues, KRS has a nice surprise for us: "Cecilia/Amanda", an unreleased Smith solo track that Crane recorded in 1997. The track is a rewrite of "Time Is Ours Now", a song from the early Smith band Stranger Than Fiction.
My Morning Jacket will play the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival this coming April. The festival takes place from April 23rd to May 2nd. A true heritage festival, Jazz Fest stands alone in presenting the highest caliber artists in such varied genres as gospel, blues, traditional and contemporary jazz, rock, R&B, Cajun, country, zydeco and much more.
Other artists appearing at the festival: Pearl Jam, Aretha Franklin, The Black Crowes, B.B. King, Van Morrison, and many more. Tickets and more info can be found at www.nojazzfest.com
Let's keep the Christmas madness rolling, this time with our favorite group. Jim James voice is so perfect for Christmas songs it's crazy. Grab some egg nog (and throw some booze in it), light the fire and press play.
Thanks to the guys over at the MMJ forum for turning me onto this.
The holidays are upon us and what better way to get you in the mood than a little Christmas music? Benjamin Sells recorded this and sent it my way. Who the f*ck is Benjamin Sells? Nobody famous but a talent nonetheless. He recorded this at home for his family and thought that maybe the readers of The Steam Engine would appreciate it, enjoy the music, I certainly am.
For more from Benjamin Sells, check out his MySpace, there are some great little blues numbers on there, he's got a unique voice.

Our boys snagged slot 31 with Z but here is a look into the entire list. The albums I too adore have been put in bold. Lots of names albums on here I should probably listen to though. Ryan Adams got some mentions, Wilco's on there and Radiohead is all over it. I don't take this list much to heart, its Rolling Stone after all.
I'll be doing something for the end of the year, not sure what just yet...
Nice trio of shows from Ryan Adams & The Cardinals. My buddy sent me a low quality YouTube video of "Harder Now That It's Over" from the 12-5 show and Ryan played such a sweet solo on that track (around 3 minutes in) I had to see if possibly there were some soundboard copies of this show. While I haven't come across a soundboard yet, there are some great audience recordings. The quality is legit, just needs to be turned up a bit here and there. And yes, that is Norah Jones on the cover. She did "Dear John" with Ryan night dos.
Thank you muzikspyfor the photo, snagged it from flicker.

I've been a sucker for 2001-ish solo acoustic Ryan Adams lately and while this show isn't totally acoustic it is a fine example of Gold era live Ryan Adams. I'm aching for a proper release (I know I say this all the time) from Ryan Adams (in any form) and would slaughter puppies for a tour. We also get a little David Letterman treat at the end of this.

In celebration of The Black Keys new project Blakroc, getting my ticket for their Chicago New Year's day performance (found out about NYE too late and the only tickets I can find are just too pricey, sad, sad, sad) and because they are awesome here are some TBK's treats. The first is a free EP they released via their MySpace page and the other is a soundboard from Sydney in 2003. Enjoy!

My Morning Jacket frontman Jim James has revealed that the band is working on its sixth studio album.
Talking to BBC 6 Music, the singer confirmed that the Tennessee-based rock band have begun the earlier stages of recording new material.
"We're working on stuff but we're just trying to keep it real stress free, real low key. I'd say we're knocking around three or four songs but they're still pretty rough," he explained.
James also said My Morning Jacket could take some time to record their next album, as the band been touring so much over the past couple of years that they need to remember how to take time off and write new songs.
In addition, he told the broadcaster that his side project, Monsters of Folk, is likely to follow up their self-titled debut with another album, although he says he will not rush to make the record.
Record Club is an informal meeting of various musicians to record an album in a day. The album chosen to be reinterpreted is used as a framework. Nothing is rehearsed or arranged ahead of time. A track is put up here once a week. As you will hear, some of the songs are rough renditions, often first takes that document what happened over the course of a day as opposed to a polished rendering. There is no intention to 'add to' the original work or attempt to recreate the power of the original recording. Only to play music and document what happens. And those who aren't familiar with the albums in question will hopefully look for the songs in their definitive versions.

Mr. David Ryan Adams posted a sweet little jam the other day at his site by a DRA mind group (that's what I'm calling all his aliases these days) called GALAXIAN.
This is the show that was webcasted (is that a word?) the other night. Just started listening right now and the quality is pretty great. I did notice that the sound went out in the left channel on "The Right Place" for a couple of seconds but f*ck it, Jim James still sounds awesome. Enjoy the show guys, I know this will be on repeat this weekend.
Props to Jeff Luke for the photo. The picture is from the Minneapolis show becasue I couldn't find any from Philly and, well, Jeff's pictures are too excellent not to use somewhere!
I wish I could have done more with the artwork guys, the picture is tops but my input is pretty bland, I am absolutely slammed right now and I haven't had a ton of time to focus on the blog, I have some great things downloading right now though and will have them up hopefully soon. Thanks for understanding!

Kory Johnson is the man. That's all I can really say. He taped the Halloween show and it sounds excellent. It really is giving me chills, taking me back to Chicago. Listen for Conor Oberst's verse in Smokin' From Shootin', it is an excellent moment.
We are missing the first 2.5 songs, no biggy though, this is such a treat.
Kory Johnson is, on top of being one of the greatest MMJ fans out there, an excellent Louisville, KY based photographer. Check out his site here.

Our good friend Jeff Luke saw Monsters of Folk last night at the Orpheum Theater in Minneapolis and took some excellent pictures. Jeff is an excellent photographer, check out some of his MMJ photos from Minneapolis and Chicago as well as the Great Lake Swimmers and Dan Auerbach shots, dude knows what he's doing.
Cullen's Pub in Oak Lawn saw an excellent night of music by Chicago's very own John Farrell and Model Stranger. The evening kicked off around 9pm with John Farrell taking the stage first with his band. Most of the material covered was from his excellent EP, In Passing, as well as some covers. I'd say the highlight of his set, for me at least, was an excellent electric version of his EP's closer, "Longest Day, Shortest Night." The song on record is a moody, atmospheric, goose bump inducing piece driven by piano and John Farrell's pain crippled and helpless voice. Live, the song takes on a new face with more energy yet the same vibe and the same goose bumps. The song is about a lost love one (you can read about the inspiration for all of his songs on In Passing at his website) and when he sings the lyric "But autumn can’t cure summer blues, So sick of breakin bad news" I want to collapse. To close the night out John and his boys played a wonderful version of The Beatle's "Get Back" that had the entire bar on their feet going wild. John Farrell has been playing and writing music for years now and is proving himself to be a very real force. He has a magnetic personality that bleeds genuineness and breeds kindness, think The Flaming Lips Wayne Coyne without all the hair. Get on the John Farrell band wagon, I firmly believe he is going to be something special.
Check out John Farrell's debut EP, In Passing. It is streaming on his site here as well as on the sidebar of The Steam Engine. He has a Radiohead pay-what-it's-worth-to-you system setup, check it out.
(Model Stranger with John Farrell, John is sans instrument)
The next band up was Model Stranger. I saw them about a month and a half ago in Schaumberg, IL and they performed as a 5 piece. Saturday night though, the band took the stage as a 3 piece and I have to say that in Model Stranger's case, less is more. The 3 piece consists of front man Stephen Francis on vocals & guitar, Kevin James on bass & vocals and new comer Brad Elliott hittin' the skins. They have a full length EP, Shaky Coma and their more recently released EP, A Boy & His Crown. While I am only familiar with their marvelous EP the Shaky Coma material translates well live and is not "bathroom break" material, I'll be grabbing that album very soon. BUT ANYWAYS, the evenings highlights for me revolved around their EP songs "Morning Paper" and "Sound the Sirens." Their MySpace and Blog both have these songs streaming and available for purchase. While their entire EP is good (and I would say even better live) I'd start with the instantly likable "Morning Paper." Stephen Francis really lets his guitar skill shine on "Sound the Sirens," as you can see in this video from a show in Indianapolis.
His guitar playing skills really blew me away though on Saturday night. The raging solo's in their cover of the Jimi Hendrix (yes, that Jimi Hendrix) song "Manic Depression" were technical, true to the original and dead nuts on. The energy they create on stage is surprising for a 3 piece but they really got the bar pumping. The 3 of them are tight group of young musicians hungry for exposure. They have technical prowess and front man Stephen Francis appears to be progressing into a unique and passionate song writer that is inspired by more than just love and heartbreak. It's refreshing and exciting and I cannot wait to see what they do next. They will be hitting the studio over the next few months to record another full length LP, keep your eyes peeled. In the meantime head over to their MySpace or Blog to check out their material.

Hoodoo Voodoo with the dueling guitar solo's between Nels and Pat is unreal, everyone knows Nels is a god but Pat is amazing, he was shredding with Nels. The new songs played live were great, Bull Black Nova in particular. One of the sickest At Least That's... I've ever heard. Tweedy has a different SG for everyday of the year man. His latest acquisition is one of these zoot suits, fucking bad ass.
While in the crowd I ran into one of the dudes responsible for the excellent iPhone guitar app, Guitar Tool Kit and also saw Jeff Tweedy's wife and kid, Sue and Spencer walking around right next to me. Pretty cool.
The sound was okay, not as bad as I expected for a 10,000 person "arena" but it left much to be desired.

Sorry for being such a stranger lately. Things have been chaotic to say the least.
This is some great weekend listening. Dan and Pat rip through some excellent Attack & Release material and their Captain Beefheart cover of "I'm Glad" gives me some serious chills, like, serious chills. The interviews are nothing to skip over in this either. While the DJ can get a bit annoying, Dan and Pat are genuinely funny guys. Pat's story about surfing is pretty good and I crack up when Dan compares Pat to a John McCain supporter (what is this, cuss cuss?). Anyways, I promise more to come soon guys.
Wilco on Sunday!!!!!

Ryan Adams’ “step back” from music is officially over, the question mark from our previous story can be removed, and the Radiohead/Trent Reznor/Jack White post major label club has a new member. Adams’ first official Pax-Am digital release, “Lost and Found”/”Go Ahead and Rain,” is now available on Ryanada.ms for $1.49 as a digital download pre-order for this Friday (9/11).
Sure, an MP3 release doesn’t confirm our “Ryan Adams to Relaunch Vinyl Label?” post, but a video of the production for an upcoming Adams vinyl release pretty much does the trick. Meanwhile, Adams also posted a video of a third brand new track earlier this week.
Is it just me or are we starting to settle in to this whole self-released music revolution?
I have been really satisfied with The Dead Weather's debut Horehound. Typically, female voices, lead female voices I should say, don't really do it for me. Don't know what it is. Alison Mosshart though, man. It's just seductive. It's dark. It's sexy. I can listen to her all day. Dean Fertita (lead guitar) is quite the player. I've never listened to Queens of the Stone Age and have zero knowledge of this man but his guitar solos on the opening track 60 Feet Tall are fucking excellent. And of course, Mr. Jack White. Is there anything this guy doesn't do? I personally like him beating up the skins, he has a raw approach that I dig. Oh yeah, Jack Lawrence is in the band too. I think his position is to stand off to the side of the stage and look like a pedophile.
Anyways, this show is excellent, it gives you a nice look into what these guys are all about.

Multiple Grammy Award-winning singer and songwriter Norah Jones will release her fourth studio album on Blue Note Records this November. Jones wrote nearly all of the songs in the past two years since completing tours in support of her 2007 global chart-topping, U.S. double-platinum album Not Too Late.
Beloved by fans for her sultry vocals and jazz-informed, piano-driven pop songwriting, Jones has taken a new direction on the as-yet-untitled album, seeing it as a chance to experiment with different sounds and an opportunity to work with a new set of collaborators, including Jacquire King, a noted producer and engineer who has worked with Kings of Leon, Tom Waits, and Modest Mouse among others. Jones also enlisted several songwriting collaborators, including Ryan Adams and Okkervil River's Will Sheff, as well as her frequent partner Jesse Harris.
"I knew I wanted to try some different things on this album," Jones says. "I'd been playing with the same musicians for a long time. We're all still friendly and I hope we play together again, but it felt like a good time to work with new people and experiment with different sounds. As far as a producer, I wanted someone who could take me out of my comfort zone and find the right musicians to capture what I wanted to do with this collection of songs. I got in touch with Jacquire initially because he engineered one of my favorite records of all time, Tom Waits' Mule Variations. He was really eager to do it and we got along really well, which was important."
King helped Jones put together a new group of musicians to perform on the album, including drummers Joey Waronker (Beck, R.E.M.) and James Gadson (Bill Withers), keyboardist James Poyser (Erykah Badu, Al Green), and guitarists Marc Ribot (Tom Waits, Elvis Costello) and Smokey Hormel (Johnny Cash, Joe Strummer). Jones and King tailored the songs to the musicians' strengths. "I think the record sounds different due to the variety of musicians we used," Jones says, "I knew I wanted to play with grooves more than I have on previous albums. Some of these new songs lent themselves to having driving rhythms underneath."
Another noticeable change on Jones' upcoming album is that she plays mostly guitar. "I actually write more on guitar than I do on piano," she says. "It just felt more natural for me to play it on these songs."
Since coming on the scene in 2002, Jones has sold a collective 36 million albums worldwide. Her three studio albums, 2002's eight-time Grammy Award-winning Come Away With Me, 2004's Feels Like Home, and 2007's Not Too Late have each topped the Billboard top 200 album charts in the U.S. and gone to No. 1 around the world. All three have been certified multi-platinum, while Come Away With Me has been certified diamond. Since 2007, Jones has collaborated with a number of artists, including Herbie Hancock, Talib Kweli, Willie Nelson, Q-Tip, Irma Thomas, and Andy Samberg's comedy troupe The Lonely Island. She has also contributed to various soundtracks, including Ken Burns' The War, Ethan Hawke's The Hottest State, and Wong Kar-wai's My Blueberry Nights, as well as the Fats Domino tribute album Goin' Home. In 2007, Jones starred opposite Jude Law in My Blueberry Nights and made a cameo in this year's season finale of 30 Rock. Also this year, Jones was featured as a flagship artist on Apple's GarageBand, presenting a tutorial on how to perform her song "Thinking About You."
More details about Norah Jones' upcoming album will be announced soon.
I want everyone to know that I have nothing to do with this compilation. darkrendar is the one to thank, he did an amazing job.
Our dear (and new) friend darkrendar passed this collection along to me. This is a shit load of amazing work. I'll let his words describe it, thank you so much darkrendar.
"A collection of live recordings of unreleased songs by Ryan Adams, of which no demo or studio recordings are available. I compiled and worked on it in my spare time for a couple of years. A lot of these were only played once, if not I picked the one that sounded best to me, when different recordings were available. Since there are so many great live recordings you can find nearly every song ever played. The last two discs are a collection of Jams & Improvs by The Cardinals. "
Ordinarily I would put the track listing up but this is packing 173 tracks, refer to the info file. Let me just say this is an amazing amazing amazing piece of work. Darkrendar, you out did yourself. He is also responsible for the Darkbreaker Liveset up at Coughing Up Blood and Whiskey, our sister site. I'm taking donations to get this guy some upscale escorts, email me with donations!
