My Morning Jacket - The Best Band on Planet Earth

Last night was a loud reminder why My Morning Jacket is the best band on this planet. They are a seemingly unstoppable force that simply can't be ignored. Whether it be collaborations with legendary song writers (John Prine most notably), teaming up with legends in the making (Monsters of Folk), working with established rap acts (The Roots), destroying huge festivals, playing with Jack White (Carl Broemel) or lending a hand to Dan Auerbach (Patrick in the Fast Five), you can't throw a stone in the legitimate music world without hitting one of these guys. And yes, while amazing on their own dabbling in various projects they truly are an incredibly fine, tight band that, when together, have a chemistry that science (or anything for that matter) can't explain.

As time lapses in between Jacket concerts I sort of forget what an event a My Morning Jacket concert actually is. It's a trip, it takes you places while standing in one spot. The way they weave genres of music into a seemless blanket of sound is an amazing feat that not many bands, ever, are or have been capable of. Their energy absorbs you the moment they hit the stage. For the time they're up there you're living inside their ever expanding bubble of incredible power.

Ugh. I just want to see more, thinking about not feeling the pulse of their songs played live damn near depresses me.

What the hell am I even writing about at this point?!?

LAST NIGHTS SHOW

Was truly incredible and maybe the best I've ever seen them. There was an insane amount of force coming from the boys last night. They were on. I mean, they're always on but last night, man o man, they were on and it was intense. As you can see by the set list below, they played one hell of a show. It would be super excellent if they released the new song "Circuital" on a 7 inch to tide us over until the next album. It's a great song to see live, I love Carl's lead guitar, it just grabs you and the guys kill it. I've seen some of these songs 10+ times live and you know what? Not a damn one of them is wearing on me. They consistantly put on the best concert I've ever seen. It's tough to even write about the show because it is difficult to convey the way I feel about it with words. It makes me want to hug you and then look you in the eyes and tell how incredible this all is. My Morning Jacket changes me and it makes me feel like no other music ever has. They are the best band on planet Earth.

Ha, I can't help to laugh while reading this.... I feel the exact same way. Really no words, just incredible as always. It's mind boggling that they are not a huge mega band right now. They could easily rock out a main stage at Lollapalooza. New album May 2011... dare I say Lolla/Pitchfork headliner 2011??

I think Lolla is a possibility but at the same time I think "Lady Gaga sells 500 million records everyday and she headlined" so I'm not sure. I don't think Pitchfork would be for them really.

All I know is we need some sort of fresh release to tide us over until 2011!

Well said, couldn't agree with you more. They are absolutely on fire this year. Can't wait for Philly and NYC shows!! Glad you had such a great Chicago show, they never disappoint!!

I agree, and it only makes me sad that I can't see them live, at least not for now.

I agree completely. Their shows are consistently epic. I feel like a different person for days after seeing an MMJ show. Greatest. band. ever.

Finally I get to share something back with this blog! I was at the show as well and took some video that I posted on YouTube. It's not pro quality, I like to just think of it as a souvenir of a great night. I have video of Bermuda Highway, Smokin from Shootin, Lay Low outro, and most of Masterplan (stupid camera). I also have uploaded video from the Nashville and Columbus shows w/ PHJB earlier this year. Jason, I think you were at the Columbus show as well. Feel free to check it out if you'd like.

Gracias Nathaniel! It's nice to have this type of stuff. Are you from Chicago?

Thanks Jim! Was wondering if you were there. You guys been busy?

I'm originally from the 'burbs of Chicago but now live in West Michigan. My family still lives down there so I try to make the Chicago MMJ shows, as well as any others that are possible...

still recovering from the chicago show holy f&ck!! Man were they on and sounds so good. For an outdoor show, I was impressed. Saw it mentioned earlier, but the Touch 2 into Lay Low was incrediable. Heading it Pittsburgh, can't wait!
